The Tradition of Cotton

History of Batik

The word batik comes from the Javanese language “Ambatik”, which means “dotted pattern”. The history of batik is thousands of years old. It was used in ancient Egypt, India, China and Indonesia. However, it was most developed on the Indonesian island of Java and is known worldwide today.

In 2009, UNESCO declared Indonesian batik as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”.

The process of making batik

Batik is basically a type of handmade dyeing. Its steps are:

1. The design is drawn on the cloth.

2. Hot wax is applied to a specific part of the design.

3. Then the cloth is dipped in the dye. The waxed part does not absorb the dye.

4. After dyeing, the wax is removed from the cloth.

5. This process can be repeated to use multiple colors if desired.

Bangladesh context

Batik is mainly popular as a handicraft in Bangladesh. Batik is used especially in women’s clothing – sarees, salwar-kameez, veils, kurtis, etc.

Batik industry has developed in various areas of Dhaka, including Chuadanga, Jessore, Rajshahi regions.

Non-governmental organizations and entrepreneurs such as Aarong, Beauty Craft, Bibiana are encouraging this industry.

Many women entrepreneurs have become self-reliant through this industry.

Importance of Batik

✅Preserves cultural heritage
✅ Supports local handicrafts
✅ Creates self-employment opportunities for women entrepreneurs
✅ Part of environmentally friendly and sustainable fashion

Conclusion

Batik is not just an artistic method; it is a living tradition. This industry has connected people with beauty and culture for ages. The current generation should spread this tradition further so that batik can maintain its respect and reach future generations.
